Having lived for decades under good NDP government in Saskatchewan, it bothers me to no end that one man has tarnished the image of the party in Canada's most populous province.Wheatsheafhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06113433537299723771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3917457418053046748.post-52795686440701425202008-10-28T11:42:00.000-04:002008-10-28T11:42:00.000-04:00I certainly didn't mean to disparage Barrett's rec...I certainly didn't mean to disparage Barrett's record. As you say, he accomplished a great deal. However, his failure to win re-election allowed many of those gains to be undone and all of them to be put at risk.

Ironically, a less far-reaching agenda might have allowed him to win re-election and actually accomplish more.Malcolm+https://www.blogger.com/profile/08469936715413110334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3917457418053046748.post-9744279457803859622008-10-28T02:11:00.000-04:002008-10-28T02:11:00.000-04:00Great analysis. He did more with his short term than many premiers have done in multiple terms. His accomplishments, such as the establishment of the Agricultural Land Reserve, ICBC, and the rise of public sector unionism, are still alive decades later. Make no mistake, Barrett is the Man.Erin Sikorahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02138263965929422499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3917457418053046748.post-49725336337872951502008-10-27T13:04:00.000-04:002008-10-27T13:04:00.000-04:00The history of the CCF-NDP can boast a number of s...The history of the CCF-NDP can boast a number of successful provincial premiers:

- Tommy Douglas (of course)
- Woodrow Lloyd
- Allan Blakeney
- Roy Romanow
- Lorne Calvert
- Ed Schreyer
- Howard Pawley
- Gary Doer
- Tony Penikett
- Piers McDonald
- Mike Harcourt
- Glen Clark (after all, he won an election he had no business winning, and it turned out his budget really was balanced after all)

There are two Premiers with mixed or undistinguished records.

- Dave Barrett - could arguably be on the list above, but his government failed to win re-election, in large part because it was too ambitious in its first term
- Dan Miller - a footnote, really - interim premier between the felling of Glen Clark by Liberal - backing media interests and police misconduct and the selection of the next premier, see below

Only two CCF-NDP premiers can be counted as unequivocal failures.

- Bob Rae
- Ujjal Dossanjh

They also have one other thing in common.Malcolm+https://www.blogger.com/profile/08469936715413110334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3917457418053046748.post-10717581112212988532008-10-27T09:26:00.000-04:002008-10-27T09:26:00.000-04:00Rae campaigned in Edmonton-Strathcona, too...Rae campaigned in Edmonton-Strathcona, too...Idealistic Pragmatisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18296481430598981678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3917457418053046748.post-9326633162327822872008-10-26T17:08:00.000-04:002008-10-26T17:08:00.000-04:00good post. Infact, the Liberal vote from 2006 collapsed in the riding and they finished fourth (or at least neck and neck) with the Green Party this time around.

Nettie lost SRB because her impressive election machine came up just short of pulling the vote (and throw in the new ID rules as icing on that cake).Sean S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/03144610271786881954noreply@blogger.com
